Alternative Solutions

There are many solutions available for online publishing. We have tried and tested many and recommend the following.
Apple Schools. The new Apple Wiki Server is probably the most ideal and manageable solution for you, especially if all students have Macbook’s and access to iWeb ‘one click’ publishing. More here...
Any platform. Install Wordpress Mu on your school server. This is an open source blog publishing system that requires some level of comfort with editing PHP code, managing a webserver, basic MySQL and being pro-active about following developments of this open source project. More here...
Microsoft Windows. Set up and configure a MS Sharepoint server. This could be a solution for schools but is more geared toward business practice rather than an easy to manage assistive tool for students. More here...
You may also wish to investigate other free open source projects such as MediaWiki.org and the SourceForge.net open source repository.
There are many other hosted publishing solutions available, but before choosing you should investigate:
How much disk space is provided and how much they charge to increase it. Most provide around 50MB free which simply is not enough for an e-portfolio. You should expect to pay around $100 for an additional 10GB.
How much monthly traffic they allow before suspending your blog. You would wish to avoid losing access to your portfolio on the day your assignment is due.
